A Barcode scanner (or barcode reader) is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes. Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical impulses into electrical ones. Additionally, nearly all barcode readers contain decoder circuitry analyzing the barcode's image data provided by the sensor and sending the barcode's content to the scanner's output port. A barcode reader consists of a scanner, a decoder (either built-in or external), and a cable used to connect the reader with a computer. Barcode scanners can be connected to a computer through a serial port, keyboard port, or an interface device called a wedge. A handheld barcode scanner works by directing a beam of light across the bar code and measuring the amount of light that is reflected back.
